The Capitals of Scandinavia: Stockholm - Copenhagen - Oslo

Stockholm is a city of rare beauty, this will confirm anybody who has ever visited it. For many people it occurs to be a real discovery how various quarters of the city have managed to maintain their unique character and charm. Huge height differences of buildings and places from where a magnificent view opens on the quarter of Soder, fundamentally differs from the narrow streets of the Medieval Old City or the pasture parks of the Djurgarden quarter. The central and the oldest quarter - Gamla Stan is situated on a tiny island. Here, you will meet the mansion of Bunde, the House of Elders, the German Church as one of the main attractions of the old city. The general pride of this region is the Royal Palace. Nearby, the Royal Armory and Treasury are situated. The Noble prize Museum and the Knight's House are also located here.

The city of Copenhagen is the capital and the largest city in Denmark. It is located on three main islands: Zealand, Amager and Slotsholmen. The last one is the historical center of the city where the first settlement was located. The word "Copenhagen" translated from old-Danish language means "a harbor for vendors". Copenhagen is divided into the historical part and the suburbs. The population in the historical part of the city is about 615.993 people and together with the population inhabiting the suburbs, it makes up more than 1.3 million people. Copenhagen is one of the oldest cities in Europe as well as the Danish Monarchy. The Danish Queen, Margaret II lives in the city center. The atmosphere of the city is quite scenic, friendly and international which allows the tourists to feel home in this big city. On one hand, Copenhagen is a quiet city with beautiful views, and on the other hand, it is a lively megapolis and the center of important financial organizations.

Oslo is the capital and the largest city of Norway, located in the southeastern part of the Baltic Sea equator, on the shores of the Oslo Fjord. It is one of the most modern and ecologically clean capitals in Europe. It is full of interesting, mainly modern architecture, museums, restaurants and shops. Being the third-largest city in Scandinavia, Oslo is surprisingly a compact, comfortable and quiet city where modern landscapes neighbor with the natural beauties of local fjords and wooded hills. It has received its name from the local Lo river which is translated as "Mouth of Luo". Oslo has become the capital of Norway in 1299 and it was exactly at that time when the Akershus Fortress was built.

This castle was built by King Frederick IV at the end of the Great Northern War and since then it has served as a country palace for Danish monarchs (external inspection). Then we will visit Frederiksborg Castle. The history of this castle begins in 1560 when King Frederick II acquired this land and built his first hunting castle here on three natural islands. Christian IV, one of the most outstanding kings in the history of Denmark, was born here, who almost completely rebuilt his father's castle and built a magnificent palace in the style of the Dutch Renaissance in its place. This castle played a very significant role in the history of Denmark: here, in the Frederiksborg church, the ceremony of "Royal Coronation" of the Danish absolute monarchs took place, here the king granted the highest order of the Danish monarchy - the Order of the Elephant, here King Frederick III held a feast in honor of his worst enemy, king of Sweden. Danish monarchs loved this palace, which for a long time served as a suburban royal residence.

The Kronborg castle is known as the "Castle of Hamlet and Elsinore". Its worldwide fame, surely, the castle earned thanks to Shakespear's homonym tragedy. Throughout centuries this castle served as an impregnable stronghold, a royal residence as well as a prison and barracks. Roskilde is a town-harbor on the shores of a fjord in Denmark, in the East of the Zealand island. The town was named in honor of its legendary founder King Ro and sacred sources, a part of which is preserved in the town districts. Roskilde was the former capital of Denmark (until 1443), a royal residence of Danish kings and Government. It still keeps serving as a residence for the local bishop till now. Roskilde is considered to be the "Capital of Vikings". in 1962 some marine archeologists lifted 5 ships from the bottom of the fjord in the XIth century. Laying on one another these ships created a barrier blocking the enemy fleet attack at the harbor entrance. The pieces of the ship are brought together and presented at the exhibition of Vikings' ships in Roskilde. One of the main attractions of the town is the ancient cathedral erected in 1280 as a symbol of State unity as well as the secular and church power of the king. In the middle of the XV the century, when king Eric of Pomerania made Copenhagen a capital city, the cathedral started to be used as the cathedral began to be used as a tomb of members of the Oldenburg house. Until 2006, the mold of Russian Empress Maria Fedorovna, the mother of the last Russian King Nicholas II was buried in the Cathedral.
